Lucerne offers excellent health care. Compulsory health insurance guarantees access to medical services.

Optimal health care

The canton of Lucerne has first-class medical care. The largest center hospital in Switzerland, the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, and other clinics and institutes offer medical services at the highest level. More and more foreign patients are traveling to Lucerne for this reason as well. Unlike state health services in some European countries, patients in Switzerland do not have to wait months for an appointment.

Social security

Every person living in Switzerland must take out basic health and accident insurance. Unlike in many European countries, the contributions are not deducted from the salary, but paid by the individual into the Swiss health insurance system.

Compulsory health insurance

You must register yourself and your family with a Swiss health insurance fund no later than three months after arriving or taking up gainful employment in Switzerland.

Accident insurance

If you work eight hours or more per week, you are insured against accidents by your employer.
