Thermoplan cuts CO2 with logistics specialist Planzer

Weggis/Dietikon - Thermoplan is reducing its CO2 emissions by way of smarter delivery planning. The company’s new logistics partner Planzer is helping the Lucerne-based manufacturer of coffee machines with its efforts in this area. Planzer also stands to benefit from this partnership.

On its journey towards its net zero target by 2050, Thermoplan has now optimized its delivery routes. As the manufacturer of coffee machines writes in a press release, a smart supply chain management system will help Thermoplan to shorten routes and save money, “also thanks to a new logistics company”.

Together with its new logistics partner Planzer based in Dietikon in the canton of Zurich, the focus has been on redesigning delivery routes and concepts. The idea is that trucks can be loaded more efficiently, i.e. take more pallets and drive fewer kilometers. This “clever planning” now facilitates grouped deliveries, rather than trucks that arrive and depart with individually loaded pallets.

For this, a truck collects the goods from various suppliers and then drives to a collection point where the various pallets are temporarily stored. From there, the pallets are transported by rail to the Senn railway hub in Seewen in the canton of Schwyz, where Planzer has its headquarters. The logistics firm then completes deliveries to Thermoplan by truck.
According to Thermoplan’s calculations, this reduces the truck distance per pallet from 100 to 30 kilometers on the way from Küsnacht to Weggis in the canton of Lucerne. Instead of around 50 deliveries with fewer than six pallets, or in some cases even individual pallets, the trucks are now well loaded for grouped deliveries. Alongside the partial shift of transport from road to rail, this results in a “massive CO2 reduction”.

For Planzer, this concept means an optimization of empty containers in addition to avoidance of traffic jams and waiting times for drivers, the press release explains. Moreover, the delivery frequency can be reduced by over 50 percent, with cost savings of around 50 percent as well.
