Superba continues its positive impact in Büron
Büron - When the 100-year-old Superba brand was sold in 1996, the owners retained the real estate. Once production stopped in the canton of Lucerne, the site was converted to an industrial park. More people work on the premises now than did in Superba’s day.
100 years ago, on September 24, 1924, Aargau-based textile manufacturers Alfred, Theodor and Otto Fehmann founded Steppdeckenfabrik AG in Büron, according to an article in the Luzerner Zeitung newspaper. The company subsequently made history by launching the Superba spring mattress in Switzerland. It sold the brand to Belgium company Recticel in 1996, and production was discontinued in Büron in 2014. Recticel then sold Superba to Portuguese company Aquinos in 2022. Today, Superba no longer manufactures its products in Büron, but has facilities in the canton of Solothurn and in Belgium.
According to the newspaper article, the community in Büron has Superba’s former owners to thank for the fact that the site did not become an industrial wasteland after production stopped. In 1996, the owners managed the rare feat of selling the brand only, and retaining the company’s real estate. The founding family then transferred this property to the new company ATO. Under the leadership of Daniel Gloor, ATO successfully offered the production facilities for rent from 2014 onwards: «15 companies, employing over 250 people, now occupy the 28,000 square-meter ATO site where Superba’s history began 100 years ago,» says the newspaper. «There are more jobs on the Büron site than there ever were in Superba’s day.»
