Käserei Seetal heading to Römerswil

Hitzkirch/Römerswil - Käserei Seetal is giving up its location in Hämikon, which is part of the municipality of Hitzkirch in the canton of Lucerne, due to lack of space. After a long search, the company has found a suitable site in Römerswil. A new facility designed for the production of 10 million liters of milk per year is to be built there.

Käserei Seetal is moving its business activities from Hämikon to Römerswil. For six years, the company had been looking for an opportunity to expand production, as detailed in a report by the regional newspaper «Seetaler Bote». However, the acquisition of a suitable plot of land in Hämikon in the municipality of Hitzkirch was shelved due to a lack of support from the local council, as the report explains further.

Instead, the Managing Director of the dairy Walter Lang and his son Manuel Lang found a plot of land in Römerswil, located around 11 kilometers away by road but still in the canton of Lucerne. «We were given a warm welcome in Römerswil», comments Manuel Lang in the article. «The mayor and communal secretary were very accommodating, answering our questions within a few days and providing a great deal of support», he adds. Lucerne Business, the business promotion agency for the canton of Lucerne, has also supported the dairy with its plans to relocate to Römerswil. The construction work on the site, which is situated adjacent to the Lidl store in Römerswil, is set to get underway next year.

The new site is designed to process 10 million liters of milk per year. At present, the dairy is forced to sell some of the milk it receives due to a lack of capacity. In Römerswil, however, it will be processed entirely into Emmental, Seeblick soft cheese, several semi-hard cheeses and other dairy products.

For the time being, Käserei Seetal’s smear cheese will also be smeared by hand at the new site. However, plans are in place to acquire a robot to handle this at a later date.
